birthdays

d'know whats great...having two birthdays. yes I was one year older yesterday. Had a wonderful day by myself writing thesis and correcting exams. I say two birthdays cause there'll always be just one person who, I won't say forgets your birthday exactly so much as thinks its on another day, like today. So I'll do again today what I did yesterday...sing happy birthday to myself, write myself a little card...the usual

scanner

ooh, ooh maybe i could borrow mgb's barcode scanner. Two are ready and waiting..beep beep, beep beep. then I could issue myself my own library card...oh the possibilities..

new year's resolution

As is customary for many people, my new year's resolutions never actually start by the end of the year so it is only now that I'm getting round to my 2004 new years resolution of reading! I'm not much of a reader (please mgb don't injure yourself... or me) but I've decided I need to educate myself and it also provides a useful distraction from the thesis. I feel 4 years is not a suffcient amount of time on one topic, so extra-curricular reding should lengthen the process out! I've bought Jane Eyre and the Picture of Dorian Gray. I started the latter about 3 weeks ago and the first chapter so far is quite good (did I mention that I'm a slow reader?). anyway if anyone would like to contribute a reading list, that would be welcome. Please, nothing on mathematical equation models, fluid mechanics, the interweb or American choppers.

squeak

Just to confirm that i am not squeak. it took me the best part of an hour to start a blog and everytime I want to post another blog (getting in on all the lingo!) I go through the link on Ronan's blog to my own blog because I get confused on where to start. When I wanted to post something the second time, I had to get blogger.com to send me my username and password (which turned out to be the same as my UL one - who knew?!) so its highly unlikely I would have the wherewithall to start a second blog under a different name...

spelling

yes yes PhD student, should be able to spell, yada yada. did I mention microsoft are great and firefox is but a fad...?

phobias

it has come to my increasing attention recently the amount of phobias or eccentricities, if you're kinder, that people. Example 1: a friend of mine doesn't like normal cups and will ask a waitress to put her coffee into a paper cup. She says this is because she likes to drink and walk abut will drink the coffee at the table. Example: another friend told me that they can only start dressing by putting their underwear on first. Now while this may be normal practice for most people, the point is they appear to fear putting on anything else, like socks, first. I'm sure such examples on eccentricities could lead to the whole nature vs nuture debate, then again it could be that nearly all of us have a mild form of obsessive compulsive disorder. Do you have OCD?

Where are the real men?

Now that I have this public airing (temporarily of course, I have no intention of babblingon everyday but..) I might as well highlight a serious issue which came to my attention last night in the Hurlers with mslf Ro and friend Ger. We chatted heartily about the Eindhoven v AC Milan game, indoor soccer etc. Later I happened to mention an article I read where it gave little tips for women to make the housework easier and encourage those lazy male partners to do more. Next thing you know mslf and Ger and talking about ironing sheets and the merits of using starch while I sat silent. Eventually I had to interrupt and ask where the men had gone? Must keep an eye on this..

Social sciences are doin it too!

Yes, I swore I would never have a blog, being that it appears to be the territory of people from other disciplines (some would say nerds, I of course would not). But I gave in, not because of some deep need to express my inner most thoughts or ramble on about shite, no it was because I was told I wouldn't be able to set up my own blog. But ha ha, I have wasted valuable PhD time to prove those Chi Ti fiends wrong!
